Breede River

The Breede river stretches through the Southern Cape and is a favorite of many local fishermen.

Big Carp, Barbel and Bass are caught here on a variety of baits.

On Thursday, 1 May 2003, Peppie van Tonder from Worcester caught this excellent 8,5kg Carp near the caravan park in Bonnievale

The bait he used was whole kernel corn (heelpit mielies) dipped in Rose Flavourant and he also loaded a good sized ground-bait.
Peppie also reckons the secret is to put 3 corn pips on each hook for the big fish.

Not only Freshwater fish are caught in the Breede River though...

In December this excellent Cob (Kabeljou) of 29Kg was caught by Elzette Matthysen near Witsand in the Breede River at a spot called 'Kragdrade' (power lines).  This fish was caught during high tide at 03H30.  Unfortunately the bait she used was not supplied with the photo..

On the 10 of April 2004 Samantha Swanepoel caught a 5 Kg Bonnito about 2 Km upstream from Witsand in the Breede River.  Although it is not an uncommon species to catch in open water, this is the first recorded case of this particular species being caught in the Breede River.  The fish was caught from the river bank using a fillited Grunter as bait.  The fish was caught early afternoon at low tide.  Samantha also says that when it eventually took the bait, it actually took off upstream rather than downstream towards the river mouth.  Anybody have any comments??? Please e-mail me.
